Obituary

Susan (Sue) K. Shepherd, age 74, of Chicago, passed away on April 2, 2017. She attended graduate school at the University of Chicago studying Chinese language and literature. After completing her studies, Sue went to Taiwan, where she lived for three years teaching English as a second language. She never lost her fond memories of this period of her life, nor her love of Taiwanese and Chinese art and cuisine.

Sue’s beautiful talents for the art of conversation resonated with her avid and life-long commitment to knowledge and understanding. She pursued many passions throughout her life, and is especially remembered for her love of traditional Irish music, her cats, watching Forensic Files, and the work of Touched by an Animal. Most important, she was devoted to her sons Anton and Devin, and her husband, Doug. Beloved friends at the Vineyard Church in Evanston were not only touched by her generous spirit and personality, but will also remember her fondly as a lively debate partner, full of strong opinions, and always with a sparkle in her eye.

Sue faced ALS with the resilience, tenacity, and infectious sense of humor that she applied to all of life's challenges. Her family and friends remain inspired by her dignity and determination to make the best of every moment.

Sue was married to Doug for 40 years. She is the cherished mother of Anton (Greta) and Devin (Marta Cook,) and the adored sister of Nancy (Paul) Donahue and Richard (Marti) Kurth.

Visitation will be from 4-7 PM on Friday, April 7 at Lakeview Funeral Home, 1458 W. Belmont, in Chicago.
