Obituary

Carey Overstreet, 64, of Chicago died unexpectedly March 2. Born in Inchon, Korea, he came to the US with his mother, Kum Nyun (Huang) Kwan, and his adoptive father Frederick Overstreet. He lived most of his life in the Chicago area. He is survived by his loving wife, Jill Niland, and son, Peter Niland of Chicago; Fred Overstreet, Fred’s wife Jean Overstreet and their daughters Mary Ann and Cathy Overstreet, all residents of Oahu, Hawaii, and all of whom loved Carey dearly.

Carey spent most of his working years in real estate sales, management and affordable housing development. On his death he was the owner of Randolph Realty Group. He held a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Northeastern University in Chicago and did graduate work in art at the University of Illinois Chicago. In the late 1970s he helped found the Palmer Square Art Fair, the Chicago Neighborhood Artists and the Logan Square Summer Celebration. He continued to mentor youth in art through the Chicago Boys and Girls Clubs. He was a charter member of the Chicago Artists’ Coalition and a member and an exhibitor at the Oak Park Art League. He also enjoyed playing guitar. He held a MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

A memorial service is planned for April 5 at the Berghoff Restaurant, 17 W Adams St., Chicago. The memorial service begins at 2 p.m. in the lower level dining area, with a reception from 3 – 4:30.
